William L. McClurg; Retired Navy Commander

Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. William L. McClurg died Saturday in a Ventura hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 84.

McClurg of Ventura was born May 26, 1916, in Pawtucket, R.I. He was a Ventura County resident for more than two decades after moving here from Connecticut.

McClurg had a 23-year career in the Navy before retiring in 1959. He rose in rank from seaman to commander and served as a gunner’s mate aboard submarines during World War II. McClurg’s family said he was highly decorated and a recipient of the Bronze Star.

Following his military service, McClurg had a successful career in business and interior decorating for Barker Bros., where he won numerous annual awards for employee excellence.

McClurg enjoyed golfing and volunteer work and was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Ventura. He also was a member of a retired officers club and Submarine Veterans of World War II, serving as president for several years.

McClurg is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ellen McClurg of Ventura; a daughter, Ellen Mary McClurg of Ventura; three sons, Bill McClurg Jr., Robert McClurg and David McClurg, all of Ventura; a sister, Mae Tracy of Pismo Beach; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Kennie McClurg, who died in 1993.

A memorial mass is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Arnold Biedermann officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 5500 S. Eastern Ave., Los Angeles, 90040.
