Injury to Keep Leclerc Out Until Next Week

Share

A second MRI exam of left wing Mike Leclerc’s injured right knee confirmed earlier test results that showed there was no ligament damage. But he probably won’t play until Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Blues.

Leclerc, the team’s second-leading scorer with 30 points, was injured in the third period of the Ducks’ 2-2 tie Dec. 28 against the Nashville Predators. He can’t remember how it happened. He was sidelined for the team’s last two games and isn’t expected to play tonight against the Calgary Flames.

“They think it’s an inflamed bursa or the joint surface is inflamed,” said Leclerc, who trails Paul Kariya for the team scoring lead by two points. “It’s day by day. They shot it up with cortisone [Wednesday]. Hopefully, it speeds up the healing process. It feels great right now. I’m shooting for next Wednesday to play again.”

Teemu Selanne, on ending a career-high 14-game goal drought with a power-play goal in Wednesday’s 3-2 overtime victory over the Florida Panthers: “It’s a big relief. I had a couple of chances right before that one too. I had a pretty good feeling about this game.”

Stat of the day: Rookie Petr Tenkrat has four goals and eight points in his first 10 NHL games. Kariya, runner-up for NHL rookie of the year in 1994-95, had four goals and seven points in his first 10 games.

For what it’s worth, backup goalie Dominic Roussel’s victory Wednesday over Florida was his first since defeating the New York Rangers, 4-3, Oct. 16. Roussel, who had 23 saves Wednesday, is 2-5-2 in 13 appearances.
