Why Is El Toro Issue Still Alive?

Share

Measure A was passed at a time when there were little or no plans available for the proposed El Toro airport. The Board of Supervisors stated that this vote would merely allow some studies to be made and that the residents of Orange County would have an opportunity to vote on the airport at a future time.

Measure F was that future time. The Orange County residents explicitly stated that they do not want an airport at El Toro. What is it that the supervisors do not understand? Can’t they see that my chad came from the “yes” for Measure F location? It was not hanging, dimpled or in any other way distorted to make it questionable as to what I and more than 60% of the other residents voted for.

Additional spending on this white elephant should be terminated immediately and the supervisors all should be required to take classes in Understanding Election Results 101, which any fifth-grader can explain to them.

* The “enlightened” Board of Supervisors, who know better than the majority of Orange County voters, have resurrected the drive for a commercial airport at El Toro.

Supervisors, please tell us where you plan to get the many thousands of megawatt hours of power needed to supply this airport.

With our critical California-wide shortage of electricity, it would be sheer stupidity to build the airport, which would siphon power from already needy Orange County residential, commercial and industrial Southern California Edison customers.

* I fear that visions of Airbus and Boeing passenger planes, flying in and out of Argyros International, have replaced childhood fantasies in the minds of three of our county supervisors.

* Party on, South County Republicans! Did it ever occur to any of you that George Argyros’ influence with the Bush clan now gives him the added leverage of the federal government to push the El Toro airport down our throats? No? Too late now! The future of South County is that of a sprawling, smoggy, screaming jet cargo port for shipping. Congratulations, you’ve won.
