Times’ All-Sports Fall Results

Share

Picking up where it left off last spring, Newport Harbor remains in the lead in the large-school division after the fall season.

The Sailors won only one Southern Section title, in boys’ water polo, but reached the title game in football and the title match in girls’ tennis. The school won its first title last spring in The Times’ Orange County All-Sports award competition.

The small school division was won last spring by Santa Margarita, which overtook Corona del Mar after the winter sports season and held on for its fourth All-Sports victory.

It might be impossible to catch the Sea Kings this school year, however, as they have taken a commanding 36-point lead after the fall. Corona del Mar, which won an All-Sports award in 1994, won section titles in girls’ cross-country, girls’ tennis and boys’ water polo and reached the semifinals in girls’ volleyball.

The All-Sports award rewards schools that have the county’s most successful overall athletic programs.

The Times’ scoring format awards points only for a team’s playoff participation and finish. Thus, field hockey programs don’t earn points because they do not have section-sanctioned playoffs.

Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs. In cross-country and golf, 20 points are awarded for a first-place finish, 16 for second, 12 for third and fourth, eight for fifth through eighth and four for qualifying.

The cutoff point to determine large and small schools categories was 2,000 students, excluding freshmen. Enrollment figures are based on those published in the Southern Section’s 2000-01 Directory of Member Schools.
