Backup Named for Ailing School Chief
The Saddleback Valley Unified School District board has appointed Assistant Supt. William Manahan to serve as acting superintendent until Supt. Peter A. Hartman recovers from emergency surgery Dec. 23.
Hartman remained in critical but stable condition Monday, more than two weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a kidney, a Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center spokeswoman said.
Hartman, who has led the district for almost 18 years, has received an outpouring of support from people across the country, district officials said.
“So many people have been asking, ‘What can we do?’ ” district spokeswoman Susan Wilson said. “The suggestion was made by [Hartman’s] family that they would feel honored if people would give blood in [Hartman’s] name.”
