Year-Round Classes OKd for 2 Schools

The Los Angeles Board of Education voted Tuesday to convert a high school in Van Nuys and a middle school in Highland Park to year-round, multitrack calendars next school year.

The 6-1 vote gave the communities of Van Nuys High School and Burbank Middle School three months to propose other ways to accommodate growing enrollment before the decision becomes final.

Parents of students at Van Nuys High argued that the decision should be delayed so they could find another solution, such as having students take classes at a nearby community college or moving the adult school off the campus.

The board made the same offer last year when it voted to convert North Hollywood High School to a year-round schedule. The school’s proposal to add portable classrooms and acquire off-campus buildings was rejected.

Van Nuys will be the 19th of 49 senior high schools on a multitrack calendar, and Burbank will be the 18th of 72 middle schools.

Board member Julie Korenstein dissented, saying that she is committed not to vote in favor of converting any school to year-round classes.
