The City Council approved contracting with three taxi companies at its Tuesday meeting for the city’s voucher-based taxi-services program, set to begin Feb. 15.

The council approved the program, which offers residents subsidized evening taxi rides within city limits, at its Nov. 21 meeting. The program is meant to reduce congestion throughout the city.

Laguna Beach residents will be able to buy one-way ride vouchers at City Hall for $2. Cab companies that agree to participate would be paid a flat fee of $8 for rides.

The city will contract with American Livery, Cabco Yellow and Orange County Yellow Cab.

Laguna Beach hopes to pay for the program with funds from the state Local Transit Fund, which is administered by the Orange County Transportation Authority. The city will run the program on a six-month trial.
