Resident Appointed to Prison Board
A Sherman Oaks resident who established a vocational diving program for prisoners has been appointed to the Prison Industry Board by Gov. Gray Davis, officials announced Thursday.
Leonard Greenstone, 77, served from 1983 to 1990 on the board, which develops and operates work programs for prisoners wanting to learn vocational skills. Greenstone helped set up a diving training program at the California Institution for Men in Chino and helped develop the Los Angeles County sheriff’s underwater search-and-recovery team, a reserve unit that recovers bodies and property from waterways.
President of the Leonard Greenstone Co. since 1946, Greenstone has been in the building trade for more than 50 years. He served in the Navy during World War II and is a member of several community organizations.
Appointees to the 11-member panel serve four years and meet at least four times a year. Their necessary expenses are covered, but they receive no salary.
