Sewage Spill Closes 1 Mile of Beach
A sewage spill has forced the closing of a one-mile stretch of Dockweiler State Beach near Los Angeles International Airport, county health officials reported Thursday.
About 1,500 gallons of sewage from an overflowing main spilled into a storm drain near Imperial Highway and Main Street. The intersection is a half-mile from the ocean.
Authorities said they recovered about 700 gallons of the discharge before it reached the sea. The cause of the spill is under investigation.
Health officials said half-mile sections of the beach on both sides of the Imperial Highway storm drain were closed Wednesday evening. The area will reopen after tests of bacteria levels show it is safe.
