Record Crowd Watches UCSB Defeat Irvine

UC Santa Barbara held off a late rally by UC Irvine and defeated the Anteaters, 70-58, on Sunday in a Big West Conference game before a crowd of 1,204, a Bren Events Center record for a women’s basketball game.

The attendance broke the mark of 1,020 set last season against the Gauchos.

The Anteaters (9-9, 1-3) trailed by 18 points with five minutes remaining, but went on a 14-4 run to close to within eight in the final minute. However, Santa Barbara (9-6, 3-0) converted six of eight free throws to seal the victory.

Reserve Maree Vincent had 18 points, four assists and four steals to lead the Anteaters. Wendy Gabbe scored 16 points and Brandy Hudson had 11.

In another conference game:

CP San Luis Obispo 87, CS Fullerton 59--Freshman guard Tamara Quinn scored a game-high 19 points and had eight rebounds for the Titans (0-16, 0-4). Fullerton led for most of the first half, but a 6-0 run in the final two minutes gave the Mustangs (7-9, 1-2) a 36-34 halftime lead.

The Titans remained close until Catrina Taylor and Kristy Baker made back-to-back three pointers, extending the lead to 52-44.
