Sharks Find Another Road to Victory in OT

Brad Stuart scored 1:51 into overtime to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues Saturday at St. Louis.

Owen Nolan, Gary Suter and Stephane Matteau also scored for San Jose, which extended its road unbeaten streak to six (4-0-2).

Daniel Corso, Jamal Mayers and Scott Young scored for St. Louis, which had its home winning streak stopped at three. It was also the first time the Blues lost in 30 games when they took a lead into the third period.

The Blues could not clear the puck from their zone and Stuart blasted a shot past St. Louis goaltender Roman Turek for the win.

Montreal 4, Washington 2--Sheldon Souray and Chad Kilger scored 1:47 apart midway through the third period in the Canadiens’ first victory in their last 10 home games against the Capitals.

Souray scored his second goal of the season on a wrist shot directly off a faceoff 7:54 into the third, just 27 seconds after Washington’s Steve Konowalchuk had scored his 15th to tie the score at 2-2.

Philadelphia 4, Carolina 3--Simon Gagne scored on a backhander with 9:52 left at Raleigh, N.C., as the Flyers won their fourth consecutive game.

The Flyers rallied from a 3-1 deficit, with Gagne’s team-leading 22nd of the season the game-winner. Philadelphia improved to a season-high 10 games over .500 (25-15-9-1).

Boston, 4, New Jersey 3--Sergei Samsonov scored two goals, including the game-winner 1:14 into overtime, to lift the Bruins at Boston.

The Devils, who blew a late 3-2 lead, lost consecutive games for the first time since early December.

Toronto 3, N.Y. Rangers 1--Darcy Tucker scored twice and Curtis Joseph made 29 saves to lead the Maple Leaf at Toronto.

Sergei Berezin also scored for Toronto, which won consecutive games for the first time in almost a month.

Buffalo 2, N.Y. Islanders 1--Rick DiPietro made his NHL debut, stopped 29 shots and added an assist for the Islanders but Stu Barnes’ goal early in the third period helped lead the Sabres at Uniondale, N.Y.

Just 56 seconds after the Islanders tied it in the third, Barnes scored the game-winner when he tipped Vaclav Varada’s shot past DiPietro. Dave Andreychuk also scored for the Sabres, who got 23 saves from Martin Biron.

Pittsburgh 5, Atlanta 1--Jaromir Jagr had a goal and two assists, and Mario Lemieux added two assists at Pittsburgh as the Penguins extended the Thrashers’ winless streak to 14 games.

Lemieux has scored in all but one of 14 games since ending a 3 1/2-year retirement a month ago, leading the Penguins to a 9-4-0-1 record (7-1 at home).

Florida 3, Tampa Bay 2--Pavel Bure scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner 59 seconds into overtime, to lead the Panthers at Sunrise, Fla.

Marcus Nilson also scored for the Panthers, who won for only the fifth time in 24 home games.

Fredrik Modin and Brian Holzinger scored for Tampa Bay, which has lost nine in a row and 13 of 14.

Colorado 5, Nashville 1--Ville Nieminen had a goal and an assist, and Milan Hejduk had an unassisted goal and two assists to lead the Avalanche to victory at Nashville.

Colorado has the best record in the NHL at 34-8-8-1.

Vancouver 5, Calgary 3--Rookie Jarkko Ruutu scored the go-ahead goal, and Daniel Sedin had a goal and an assist to lead the Canucks at Alberta, Canada.

Scott Lachance, Harold Druken and Markus Naslund also scored for the Canucks, who posted consecutive victories coming off a four-game losing streak.

Goalie Mike Vernon signed a one-year contract extension with the Calgary Flames. . . . The Florida Panthers activated Len Barrie off injured reserve. . . . Alexandere Boikov was put on waivers by the Nashville Predators.
