Marquette Pays Its Respects to McGuire in Record Performance

Marquette, with players wearing patches on their jerseys in memory of the late Al McGuire, set a single-game school record for three-point shooting percentage in an 82-57 Conference USA victory over Tulane at Milwaukee on Saturday.

Marquette, playing only 36 hours after the death of beloved former coach McGuire, made 12 of 15 three-point shots for a school-record 80%.

Before the game, fans and players observed a moment of silence for the folksy McGuire, who died Friday morning following a lengthy illness caused by a rare blood disorder. Marquette players wore black circular patches with the letters “AL” on their left breast.

McGuire coached Marquette to the 1977 NCAA championship and later became a well-known broadcaster.

Marquette, 10-7 overall and 5-1 in Conference USA, took its first halftime lead in nine games at 36-28 by making six of eight three-point shots. The Golden Eagles then pulled away from Tulane (7-12, 0-6) with a 19-5 second-half run fueled by four three-point baskets.

Dan Dickau scored a career-high 25 points and had eight assists as Gonzaga beat the University of San Diego, 78-57, at Spokane, Wash.

Dickau made all of his eleven free throw attempts for Gonzaga (14-5, 6-0), including four due to technical fouls called on San Diego Coach Brad Holland, who was tossed from the game four minutes into the second half.

Gonzaga took the lead 41-40 three minutes into the second half when Stepp made a three-point shot that launched the Bulldogs on a 17-0 run and a 55-40 lead with eleven minutes remaining.

Holland was fuming over his ejection after the game.

“I was trying to call a time out,” he said. “After [the ejection] Gonzaga did everything they wanted to offensively. I’m very disgusted. I won’t sit back after what happened tonight.”

Holland said he planned on contacting the West Coast Conference head of officials to discuss the ejection. He watched the remainder of the game from the locker room.

Andre Laws scored all of his 11 points in the first half for San Diego (11-8, 3-3).
