Police, Community Must Work Together
Re “A Thin Blue Line Splits Love, Hate,” June 22:
As a Huntington Beach resident, I believe it is really nice to see The Times covering both sides of the unfortunate situation in Oakview.
This area of Huntington Beach really gives the city a bad name. The community and the police officers are working hard to help the people of Oakview make their lives and the city better.
“It’s not harassment if you’re breaking the law,” said Fran Andrade, a liaison between the neighborhood school and community. The people in the area do not understand that they are breaking the law. Because of the language barrier that many of the police face with the residents of Oakview, it is hard to explain to them what they are doing wrong. However, I don’t know of any city that does not have the laws in languages other than English.
When Antonio Saldivar was shot, it was unfortunate that he had to die. Now the Police Department and the community need to use this death as an incentive to clean the area of the constant problems before anyone else gets hurt.
