Boston Red Sox reliever Bryce Florie, in only his third appearance since being hit in the face by a batted ball last September, left Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays after being struck in the left wrist by a line drive.

“I’m OK,” he said. “I knew this was coming. I just didn’t think it would happen in my third outing.”

After Jeff Frye’s single deflected off Florie’s non-pitching wrist in the seventh inning, Red Sox Manager Jimy Williams and the team trainer rushed to the mound. The trainer had Florie shake his hand.

“I started squeezing my hand and it started shaking,” said Florie, who had a small bruise. “I saw the ball. It was a bad spot. You only have two seconds to react.”

Florie said he did not expect to be sidelined.

Florie was hit in the right eye by a ball hit by Ryan Thompson of the New York Yankees last Sept. 8. The blow fractured several bones in his face and left his vision impaired.
