Los Angeles County’s largest brush fire of the season burned 110 acres in Bouquet Canyon, north of Santa Clarita on Saturday.

About 300 firefighters, some from as far away as Carson and Whittier, battled the blaze that started about 2:50 p.m. near the 29000 block of Bouquet Canyon Road, authorities said.

The fire was fully contained by 8 p.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Shifting winds fanned the fast-moving fire that in the first 20 minutes burned about 50 acres of hilly terrain on the west side of Bouquet Canyon Road. Ten minutes later, the fire had enveloped 100 acres.

Most of the fire occurred on fields farmed by the Lombardi family and came within 100 yards of Robert and Joann Lombardi’s home. The farmland, which family members said had not burned in 30 years, was not under cultivation.

No buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported. Bouquet Canyon Road was closed to through traffic for several hours.

Quick action by the battalion chief overseeing the Santa Clarita Valley, who called in the U.S. Forest Service and Los Angeles Fire Department to aid county firefighters, prevented the blaze from spreading, said Capt. Brian Jordan of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“This could have been a big, deadly, damaging fire,” Jordan said. The county fire season began in mid-May.

Aerial support included four water-dropping helicopters and two fixed-wing air tankers.
