Rapids Sidetrack Earthquakes’ Roll

Raul Diaz Arce had a goal and two assists as the Colorado Rapids defeated San Jose, 3-1, Saturday night before 18,047 at Denver, ending the Earthquakes’ unbeaten streak at 13 games.

Marcelo Balboa and Chris Carrieri also scored for Colorado (4-8-5), which won consecutive games for the second time this season. Rapid goalkeeper Scott Garlick made four saves.

Ronald Cerritos scored in the 89th minute for the Earthquakes (8-3-5), who had not lost since a 2-1 defeat at Miami on April 21.

Colorado charged to a two-goal lead in the first half.

Balboa took a drop pass from Diaz Arce and scored past San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon in the fifth minute.

Cannon made a diving save on a shot by Carrieri in the 18th minute, but Carrieri then scored on a header just inside the penalty box.

Diaz Arce gave the Rapids a 3-0 lead three minutes into the second half on a pass from Imad Baba.

New York/New Jersey 3, Miami 0--Adolfo Valencia scored twice as the MetroStars ended the Fusion’s 12-match unbeaten streak before 22,370 at Miami.

MetroStar goalkeeper Tim Howard made seven saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Petter Villegas scored in the 57th minute for the MetroStars (8-6-3).

The Fusion entered Saturday’s match with a league-best 11-1-3 record and 36 points.

Chicago 3, Tampa Bay 2--Eric Wynalda had two goals and an assist to lead the Fire past the Mutiny before 8,563 at Tampa, Fla.

The Fire (9-3-3) is unbeaten in its last six games. Tampa Bay (3-13-1) has won only once in its last 14.

Hristo Stoitchkov scored in the 79th minute and set up the winning goal by Wynalda four minutes later.

Columbus 2, Dallas 2--Edson Buddle scored on a header in the 90th minute as the Crew tied the Burn before 18,937 at Columbus, Ohio, in a game that featured four goals in the final 15 minutes.

John Wilmar Perez scored in the 81st minute for Columbus (5-5-5).

Chad Deering and Jason Kreis scored for Dallas (6-6-4).

Kansas City 2, New England 1--Chris Brown scored in second-half injury time, as the Wizards defeated the Revolution before 13,141 at Foxboro, Mass., ending New England’s five-game unbeaten streak.

Chris Klein scored in the 66th minute for the Wizards (7-9-1).

Mauricio Wright scored from eight yards in the 93rd minute for New England (4-8-4).

Atlanta 3, Washington 2--Kelly Cagle scored in the 81st minute to lead the Beat to a victory over the Freedom before 18,887 at Atlanta, extending Atlanta’s unbeaten streak to six games.

Lisa Krzykowski and Homare Sawa also scored for the Beat. Monica Gerardo and Michelle French scored for Washington.

Carolina 2, Philadelphia 0--Danielle Fotopoulos scored on a header in the fourth minute as the Courage defeated the Charge before 5,758 at Chapel Hill, N.C. to end Carolina’s five-game winless streak.
