From Times Staff Reports

A proposed charter school primarily for students with learning and physical disabilities moved a step closer Tuesday to approval. The Los Angeles Board of Education heard nothing but support for the school’s creation at a public hearing.

“We celebrate differences and we build upon every child’s strength,” said Claire Cavallaro, chairwoman of the Cal State Northridge special education department. She would be the school’s director.

Charter schools receive funding from the districts that establish them but the schools have broad autonomy to operate.

The school would teach students with special needs as well those without disabilities. It would also serve as a training center for CSUN education majors.

The board is slated to decide at its July 24 meeting whether to approve the charter school’s creation.
