Brett Quigley shot a 10-under-par 62 to take control of the B.C. Open Friday in Endicott, N.Y.

First-round co-leader Ty Tryon, a 17-year-old from Orlando, Fla., stumbled Friday after his first-round 65. He struggled with his putting, and spent a lot of time playing out of bunkers. The high school junior shot a 72 in muggy conditions at En-Joie Golf Club and is eight strokes back at seven-under 137.

Quigley took advantage of the cooler morning temperatures to shoot a career-best round, one short of matching a tournament record. With a two-round score of 15-under 129, Quigley holds a three-stroke lead over Mark Hensby and Jonathan Kaye.

Thursday’s co-leader Edward Fryatt shot a 68 to match Jim McGovern, who shot 66, at 11-under.

Although disappointed, Tryon shrugged off his performance.

“I showed some stupidness out there,” Tryon said. “I’m not mad or angry. I’m a little disappointed. It’s just the way it goes.”

Tryon made his second cut in his second PGA Tour event. In March, Tryon qualified for the Honda Classic and tied for 39th to become the youngest player to make a cut since 15-year-old Bob Panasik in the 1957 Canadian Open.

Tryon, who drew galleries of more than 1,000, continued to overshadow everyone else’s performance, including Quigley, nephew of senior tour regular Dana Quigley.

After shooting two under through 10 holes, Quigley had four birdies and two eagles. His score of 28 on the final nine holes tied a PGA Tour low for this season set by Davis Love III at the AT&T; Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Gary McCord and Dana Quigley shot seven-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the SBC Senior Open and Bruce Lietzke struggled to a 74 in his senior debut in Long Grove, Ill.

McCord birdied four of his first six holes on the Kemper Lakes course. He made an 18-foot putt for birdie on No. 2, a 15-footer for birdie on the sixth and another 15-footer on the 11th for an eagle.

Hale Irwin shot 69. He won the 1995 tournament at Stonebridge Country Club for the first of his record 31 senior titles, and also won in 1998 and 1999 at Kemper Lakes.

Karen Stupples and Nancy Scranton shared the lead at seven-under 135 after two rounds in the LPGA Big Apple Classic in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Stupples had a five-under 66 and Scranton shot par Friday to keep a piece of the lead she had by herself after a first-round 64.

Michele Redman, who was second after the opening round, Mi Hyun Kim and Rosie Jones were all at six-under 136.

Jen Hanna holed a five-wood from 203 yards for a double eagle on the 432-yard, par-five 15th.
