LSU’s 13th-Inning Win Keeps Hope Alive

Louisiana State moved a step closer to giving retiring Coach Skip Bertman a chance to win one more national title.

David Raymer’s sacrifice fly in the 13th inning gave the Tigers a 4-3 victory overTulane in Friday night’s opening game of the best-of-three super regional at Metairie, La.

LSU moved within one victory of its 12th trip to the College World Series, where Bertman would seek his sixth national title in the last 11 years.

Freshman Lane Mestepey worked 10 innings for the defending champion Tigers, but did not figure in the decision. Mestepey gave up 11 hits and three runs.

In other super regionals:

Stanford 11, South Carolina 1--Ryan Garko had three hits, including a home run, as the Cardinal defeated the Gamecocks at Stanford.

Miami 10, Clemson 8--Mike DiRosa drove in two runs in the seventh inning as the Hurricanes defeated the Tigers at Coral Gables, Fla., for their 12th consecutive victory.

Nebraska 7, Rice 0--Shane Komine struck out 12 and the Cornhuskers moved within one victory of their first College World Series appearance by shutting out the Owls at Lincoln, Neb.

Rain forced postponement of super regionals between Florida State and Georgia at Athens, Ga., and Tennessee and East Carolina at Kingston, N.C. Both will begin today with a third game Monday, if necessary.
