Arizona starter Brian Anderson went on the 15-day disabled list because of a groin injury Sunday, and right-hander Geraldo Guzman was recalled from triple-A Tucson.

Anderson left Arizona’s 2-1 victory over San Diego on Saturday night because of a left groin pull after pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings.

It is Anderson’s second stint on the disabled list this season. He was sidelined from April 12 to May 1 because of a strained lower back.

No decision has been made on whether Guzman will take Anderson’s next scheduled start Thursday against the Dodgers.

Anderson had known since the injury occurred that he was headed for the DL.

“The worst part about it is, like the doctor said, groins are a funny injury. They take a long time to heal,” he said Sunday.

Anderson said he had the same injury in the last spring training game with Cleveland in 1996 and was out for several weeks.

Seattle Manager Lou Piniella left the team Sunday after his father-in-law died.

Piniella will miss the Mariners’ next four games after flying to Tampa, Fla., to be with his family. Frank Garcia died Sunday at 77 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Piniella missed Seattle’s game Sunday against Tampa Bay and also won’t be with the team for its series against former Mariner star Alex Rodriguez and the Texas Rangers this week.

Bench coach John McLaren will be the acting manager while Piniella is gone. Piniella is expected to return to Seattle on Friday for the San Diego series.

The New York Yankees promoted pitcher Brandon Knight from triple-A Columbus, two days after putting starter Orlando Hernandez on the DL.

Knight was 5-3 with a 3.58 earned-run average at Columbus. The Yankees acquired the 25-year-old right-hander in December 1999, as part of the trade that sent outfielder Chad Curtis to Texas.

The Yankees also transferred pitcher Christian Parker from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. He made one start for New York before being sidelined by tendinitis in his right shoulder.

Texas right-hander Ryan Glynn was put on the 15-day DL because of a disk injury in his lower back.

The team plans to activate left-hander Darren Oliver from the DL to start in Glynn’s place Wednesday in Seattle.

The Boston Red Sox put infielder Craig Grebeck on the 15-day DL and recalled infielder Lou Merloni from their Pawtucket farm club.
