Law Would Ban Grocery Sales at Big-Box Stores
The Oxnard City Council has asked staff members to draft an ordinance that would prevent new big-box stores such as Wal-Mart and Costco from selling groceries and pharmacy items.
Supporters of the ordinance say that big-box stores should be reined in to stop them from hurting small businesses. Others argue that the ordinance prevents competition, raises prices and represents political maneuvering on the part of lobbyists.
When considering the ordinance, the council is expected to weigh the experience of California cities that have adopted similar ordinances.
