* Circuit City Group said earnings plunged 82% to $10.13 million, or 5 cents a share, for its fiscal first quarter, hurt by the absence of major appliances and an overall weakness in personal computers. Sales fell 23% to $1.88 billion. The results were a penny better than forecasts that were revised upward last week on the company’s guidance.

* Media General Inc., owner of U.S. television stations and publisher of the Tampa Tribune newspaper in Florida, said it expects second-quarter earnings of about 35 cents a share, well below the 50 cents it had forecast earlier, because of a decline in advertising spending.
