Setzer Wins Trucks; Papis on CART Pole

Dennis Setzer held off NASCAR truck series points leader Scott Riggs and ended a 17-race drought with a victory Saturday in the Memphis 200 at Millington, Tenn.

Setzer grabbed the lead on the 166th lap of the 200-lap event at the three-quarter-mile Memphis Motorsports Park and outran Riggs. Setzer’s Chevrolet held a 1.608-second lead--about a dozen truck lengths--at the conclusion of the 150-mile contest.

The victory, Setzer’s sixth in the past four seasons, was worth $43,610. He averaged 82.279 mph in a race slowed seven times because of 46 laps of caution.

Riggs’ second-place finish added 10 points to his series championship lead that grew to 53 over Joe Ruttman, who finished third.

Max Papis, trying for his second career CART victory, won the pole for the Freightliner/G.I. Joe’s 200 at Portland, Ore., turning the fastest lap despite starting in the slower group.

Papis covered the 1.969-mile road course in 57.785 seconds (122.669 mph), and the time held up when the faster drivers took to the track for the second 30-minute qualifying session.

Three-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher and his younger brother Ralf gave their fans exactly what they wanted--an all-German front row for the European Grand Prix at Nurburgring, Germany.

Driving at their home track, Michael and Ralf qualified 1-2 for the third time this season. They’ll settle their differences over 67 laps today before more than 100,000 compatriots.

Gary Scelzi held the top spot in top-fuel qualifying for the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals at Madison, Ill.

Scelzi’s quarter-mile run Friday of 4.563 seconds at 319.45 mph held up to give him his second top qualifying position of the season.

Bruce Sarver (funny car) and Warren Johnson (pro stock) also topped their divisions in the $1.9-million event at Gateway International Raceway.
