A gunman who had wounded a man who was running from him in the Wilshire district was shot to death Wednesday when he pointed his pistol at a police detective and the detective opened fire, Los Angeles police said.

Sgt. John Pasquariello, a spokesman for the LAPD, said the plainclothes detective happened to be driving through the intersection of Washington Boulevard and 7th Avenue at about 10 a.m. when he saw the gunman chasing his victim down the street.

Pasquariello said that as the detective got out of his car, the suspect shot the man he was chasing and then aimed at the detective, who had drawn his pistol. The detective shot the gunman, who died at the scene.

The names of the 20-year-old victim, the dead suspect and the detective were not released.

Pasquariello said it had not been determined why the gunman was chasing his victim.

“It could be a robbery. It could be a gang thing. We don’t know yet,” the sergeant said.

Pasquariello said the victim is expected to recover.
