Saarloos Overpowering in Relief as Titans Win

Kirk Saarloos pitched seven scoreless innings of relief, extending his streak to 28 innings without allowing a run, as Cal State Fullerton defeated Wichita State, 3-1, in the Baseball Bash tournament Saturday at Goodwin Field.

Saarloos made his 110th career pitching appearance, tying the school record set by Scott Wright from 1981-84. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, allowed one hit and struck out a career-high 11.

After Wichita State (5-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Cal State Fullerton (8-7) tied the score in the sixth when Jason Corapci’s two-out single drove in P.J. Pilittere.

Pilittere led off the eighth inning with an infield single, Shane Costa was hit by a pitch and Robert Guzman bunted for a hit. Corapci drove in the go-ahead run with a single and David Bacani added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

The Titans will face Big West Conference rival Long Beach State in the tournament finale today at 5:30 p.m.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Vanguard 7, Westmont 4--Anthony Walker pitched his fourth complete game of the season for host Vanguard (11-5, 3-2), allowing five hits and striking out six to improve to 4-1. Sam Baeder had three hits and Andy Riddell homered for Vanguard.

In the Cal State Fullerton softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 2, Minnesota 0--Jodie Cox pitched a perfect game, striking out four, for the host Titans (17-6). Cox also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

In an afternoon game, Fullerton lost to California, 2-0, in eight innings.

Jocelyn Forest pitched a two-hitter for California (17-0). Cal State Fullerton’s Gina Oaks allowed four hits and two runs in eight innings.

In the Redlands softball tournament:

Concordia 4, The Master’s College 1--Andrea Castillo had two hits and two RBIs, and allowed one run in seven innings to lead Concordia (5-0) in the championship game.
