It’s Still Quite an Eventful Life for Moore

Terry Moore became an actress at age 11, married Howard Hughes at 19, posed for Playboy at 55, and competed in her second marathon Sunday at 72.

And she did it with a broken left arm.

Moore suffered the injury during a 26-mile training walk Feb. 10 when she stepped in a pothole and injured herself trying to break her fall.

She had planned to cover the 26.2 miles with a combination of walking and running but because of the injury walked the distance Sunday. She was accompanied by her trainer, Fran Bustos, a former Olympic race walker.

Moore competed in the 1999 L.A. Marathon, a year after a friend, Tora Riceberg, convinced her over dinner to join L.A. Leggers, a running/walking club for marathon runners.

“There was a seven-mile training run the next morning, and my husband told me I was crazy to try and do that,” Moore said. “Whenever someone tells me I can’t do something, that’s when I do it.”

After Sunday’s marathon, she said she wasn’t sure of her exact time. “But it was under seven hours,” she said. “I was 45 minutes faster than I was two years ago, and I’m two years older.

“I can’t tell you how great I feel right now,” she said.

Moore, who has had roles in about 80 movies since her debut in “Maryland” in 1940, starred in the original “Mighty Joe Young,” co-starred with Lana Turner in “Peyton Place,” and danced with Fred Astaire in “Daddy Long Legs.”

Jennifer York of Channel 5’s “Morning News,” who was running to benefit the Blind Children’s Center, completed the race in a respectable 4:40:13.

York also ran in last year’s marathon, but dropped out after 18 miles because of the bad weather.
