SWIMMING

* Hart High graduate Anthony Ervin of California set a Pacific 10 Conference meet record in winning the 100-yard freestyle in 42.21 seconds Saturday in the conference championships at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Ervin’s time bettered the previous record of former Cal teammate Bart Kizierowski, who swam 42.29 last year.

Ervin, who tied for the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle and was on the silver medalist 400-meter freestyle relay team in the 2000 Olympics, anchored Cal’s winning 400-yard free relay team (2:52.20).

He won the 50-yard freestyle Thursday in a meet-record 19.11. Ervin’s time surpassed Matt Biondi’s 19.15 in 1987 but was just off the NCAA record of 19.08 by Neil Walker of Texas in 1997.

USC junior Joel Everman, a Notre Dame High graduate, placed fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:09.99.

Mark Warkentin, a USC junior who swims for Oxnard-based Buenaventura Swim Club, was sixth in the 1,650 in 15:18.12.
