Newborn Girl Found in Plastic Bag in Pico Rivera

A newborn girl was found Wednesday in a plastic bag beside a trash container in Pico Rivera.

The baby was discovered shortly before 9 a.m. by employees of a business in the 9200 block of Whittier Boulevard who “heard what they thought was crying coming from a plastic bag” behind their building, Sheriff’s Lt. Mary Leef said.

The child, who apparently hadn’t been there very long, was taken to Beverly Hospital in Montebello. She is in good condition, Leef said.

The baby’s race was not immediately known.

Leef said detectives need the public’s help because they have few leads.

Under a new law, the parents could have taken the infant to an emergency room and they would not have been prosecuted.

In a separate incident, another baby girl was in serious condition, and her mother’s boyfriend was in custody on suspicion of beating the baby, Leef said.

Around 11:45 Tuesday night, the mother let her boyfriend, identified as Andrew Calderon, 38, of Whittier take the 15-month-old baby with him to the store. When he didn’t return after midnight, the mother and a friend went looking for them, Leef said.

She found her girl with her boyfriend, and the baby was in serious condition from a beating, police said. The mother convinced her boyfriend to take them to a hospital. The child was eventually transferred to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles for treatment.
