Separate Fires Damage Business, Destroy House
A late-night fire caused $1 million in damage to a Garden Grove business, and a midmorning blaze gutted a home in La Habra, investigators said.
Firefighters responded about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday to a fire at the Sleepy Hollow antiques mall in the 12600 block of Main Street in Garden Grove, a facility that houses about 50 antique dealers who keep most of their merchandise in glass cases and cubicles.
Crews put the blaze out quickly, with no injuries and only about $50,000 in damage to the building, said Capt. Ed Lucas, a spokesman for the Garden Grove Fire Department, but flames destroyed nearly $1 million worth of antique curios, furniture, collectibles and other valuable items.
“The owner [even] collected Howdy Doody stuff,” said Lucas, who had visited the mall in the past.
About 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, a fire roared through a home in the 700 block of Ryan Avenue in La Habra.
“The owners left, reported the fire, then tried to get back in, but there was too much smoke,” said Capt. Bob Lee, a spokesman for the La Habra Fire Department. “It ruined the whole inside of the house. They will have to completely gut it.”
Eighteen firefighters from two cities battled the house blaze for about 25 minutes before bringing it under control, Lee said. Damage was estimated at $75,000 to the contents and $175,000 to the structure.
The causes of both fires are still under investigation, officials said.
