A mechanic at a Huntington Beach disposal company was in very critical condition Wednesday after being crushed between two garbage trucks, authorities said.

Delfino Solis, 61, of Santa Ana was at work at Rainbow Disposal Service on the 17000 block of Nichols Street about 2:20 p.m. when the accident happened, investigators said.

“He had just emptied a small amount of trash and was outside the vehicle,” said Lt. Bill Peterson, a spokesman for the Huntington Beach Police Department.

“For unknown reasons, the vehicle began to roll forward. He ran to the driver’s compartment and was apparently trying to stop the truck when he was pinned between the cab, the driver’s door and another parked trash truck.”

Solis was taken to the UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was being treated late Wednesday for internal injuries.

The incident is under investigation, Peterson said.
