Ty Tryon is on the verge of something not even Tiger Woods could do--take a week off from high school and make the cut on the PGA Tour.

Tryon, a 16-year-old sophomore who got into the Honda Classic as a Monday qualifier, proved he belonged Thursday with birdies on the last three holes for a five-under-par 67, which left him only two strokes out of the lead at Coral Springs, Fla.

Woods was younger by nine months when he was given a sponsor’s exemption into the Los Angeles Open in 1992, but he missed the cut with rounds of 72-75 at Riviera.

Tryon not only played well beyond his years, he was within shouting distance of leaders Jesper Parnevik, Geoff Ogilvy and Ben Ferguson.

“I had a great time out there,” Tryon said. “I really enjoyed it. Playing well is definitely a plus, but it was awesome. I had a lot of fun.”

Parnevik, Ferguson and Ogilvy each shot a 65 and shared the first-round lead on the TPC at Heron Bay. Eighteen others, including Tryon, were within two shots heading into the second round.

Jen Hanna broke par in only 17 rounds last year. Three of them came at the Welch’s-Circle K Championship.

Small wonder that the bad memories of a so-so rookie season and a tough start to 2001 evaporated as soon as she teed off at the Randolph Park North municipal course.

“When you see every putt going in, how can you not feel like you’re in a zone?” Hanna said after tying Laura Davies’ first-round record with a nine-under 63 at Tucson.

Her round left her two shots ahead of defending champion Annika Sorenstam, who earned enough points last year in Tucson to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame and has more titles (23) than Hanna has made cuts (13).

Michele Redman, Emilee Klein and amateur Lorena Ochoa, a University of Arizona freshman, shot 66s.
