Jack Li’s sweep at No. 2 singles and a key doubles victory gave No. 2 University a 10-8 victory over No. 6 Woodbridge Thursday in a nonleague boys’ tennis match at University.

After beating Erik Ortega, 6-3, in his first match, Li topped Woodbridge No. 1 Brett Van Linge, 6-1.

Van Linge was coming off a 6-4 win over No. 1 Aaron Yovan in a emotional set that lasted more than an hour and included two delays over disputed calls.

“It’s too bad it gets to that point, especially with two great players like that,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Barth said. “Their emotions just took over.”

While Van Linge and Yovan battled, the Trojans’ doubles team of Mike Haier and Nam Nguyen erased a 4-1 deficit against A.J. Bertone and Paul Strozier and won, 7-5.

“I think [Haier and Nguyen’s] doubles win was the key to victory, and Jack Li played smart tennis for us today,” Trojan Coach Jeff Hammond said. “It’s typical of them not to give up.”
