* Re “Advertising Firm Uses Its Billboards to Back Delgadillo for City Attorney,” March 7: A billboard company is flexing its political muscles again, trying to elect a city attorney who would most likely turn a blind eye to the sea of illegal billboards. In order to circumvent a spending limit, it says it’s “independent.” Do we want to believe that? Deputy Mayor Rocky Delgadillo is trying to defeat Councilman Mike Feuer, the candidate who tried to stem visual pollution by regulating billboards.

Delgadillo says he will not be beholden to the $40,000 largess. Do we want to believe that? By the way, the company, Eller Media Co., is also trying to pass a city ordinance that would allow billboards on the freeways within Los Angeles city limits. A Jan. 30 Times editorial called the maneuver a “sleight of hand.” That we do believe.

* In the election next month, there are several candidates for Los Angeles mayor. How many of them are recycled officeholders being two-termed out of their present office? The concept of term limits was to bring in “new blood.” In reality, it turns out mostly to be recycled blood.
