North Carolina Upends Fullerton in Softball
Cal State Fullerton came up short in each of the final two innings and dropped an eight-inning decision to North Carolina, 10-9, in the first round of the Kia Klassic softball tournament Wednesday at Cal State Fullerton.
The Titans had a chance to break a 7-7 tie in the seventh, but Gina Oaks was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Jenny Topping’s double.
After North Carolina (17-6-1) scored three times in the eighth, Cal State Fullerton came back to score twice in the bottom of the inning, including a two-out home run Yasmin Mossadeghi. Radara McHugh, who pitched a complete game for the Tar Heels, was then able to get the final out.
Oaks (9-5), who replaced starter Christy Robitaille with one out in the fourth inning, took the loss for the Titans (20-7).
In nonconference games:
Concordia 2-5, Oklahoma Baptist 0-1--Concordia extended its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep at home.
Andrea Castillo (8-5) pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven in the first game. Jana Padilla drove in two runs with a double in the second game for the Eagles (17-11).
In Orange Empire Conference golf:
Saddleback remains unbeaten--Dalen Demary shot a one-under-par 71 at Victoria Golf Club to lead unbeaten Saddleback, which finished first with a 374. Orange Coast (394) was second, followed by Riverside (396) and Cuyamaca (397).
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Fullerton 13, Irvine Valley 2--Colleen Burdick and Andee Lindgren had two doubles and Lisa Schiro added a double and a triple for Fullerton (21-6, 6-1).
