Mayoral Education

Share

* Several candidates for mayor of Los Angeles have made education a major issue in their campaigns. In their speeches and advertisements, they describe what they have done for public schools or what they plan to do.

The problem is that they are running for a city office, not for superintendent of public instruction. Public education is not a city function. The mayor of Los Angeles has no authority over the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is an independent agency of the state. If these candidates do not understand the scope of the office for which they are campaigning, perhaps they are not qualified to be mayor.
