Commission: Tramples Rights, Saves Coast

Share

* Re “Ruling Seen as Major Blow to Coastal Panel,” April 27: As a resident of California’s coast for 40 years, I can speak from experience that the California Coastal Commission is living proof that “power corrupts--absolute power corrupts absolutely.” It has trampled on the rights of individual California citizens for much too long. Let’s hope that Judge Charles C. Kobayashi’s ruling is upheld and enforced.

In 1972, fully 70% of the voters in California spoke loudly and clearly: Save the coast, and save our coastal open spaces. That is how the Coastal Act was created, and it has served us well. We created the Coastal Commission to oversee it all, and it has served us well. But now the building industry, faced with a commission that is increasingly concerned about our dwindling natural resources, is making a last-ditch effort to sidestep the mandate of the people by calling into question the constitutionality of the Coastal Commission.

This is a wake-up call to all who love our coastal open spaces. It’s time to get involved. Support our Coastal Commission!
