Thank you for a most interesting and inspiring profile of Thomas Crow and his work at the Getty Research Institute (“Rethinking a Think Tank,” by Suzanne Muchnic, April 29). Los Angeles is sometimes described as an intellectual vacuum and considered inferior to other major U.S. cities in the field of fine arts scholarship. While I have never agreed with that assessment, I find it particularly heartening to read about what Crow and his staff are attempting to create at the institute. Bravo to their efforts, and for giving us more ammunition in defending Los Angeles as a “thinking man’s” city.
