The Power Play at Disneyland

Re “A Lightbulb Moment in the Power Crisis,” May 2:

I found Dana Parsons’ comments very interesting about the planned Main Street Electrical Parade through Disney’s California Adventure. So they may light up the summer sky while a few blocks away we may be eating by candlelight. It was stated that, “Disney was quick to point out that its multitude of lights is battery-powered.”

But no mention was made of the energy required to recharge the batteries. That, of course, will be derived from the local utilities, and with the battery charge/discharge cycle being far less than 100% efficient, a significant amount of energy will be wasted with the tens of thousands of lights.

And so the rest of us are asked to conserve our electrical power usage to minimize the rolling blackouts expected this summer.
