Don’t Wait for the Movie

A theme seems to be emerging in new literature these days. That is, borrowing liberally from old literature. First, there was “The Wind Done Gone,” a parody, its writer says, of Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind.” Next came the just-released book from a French novelist that not only borrows characters from Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables,” but advances that classic’s plot.

So who are we to buck a good trend? We can come up with sequels too. “Catcher in the Rye Bread,” perhaps, in which Holden Caulfield gets his act together and opens a chain of bakeries. Or maybe “Don Juan Quixote,” in which our hero discovers Viagra and wins not only Dulcinea’s heart but that of every other wench in the village.

OK, maybe you can do better. Mail your idea for a literary sequel in 30 words or fewer to Sequels/SoCal Living, L.A. Times, 202 W. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90012; fax it to (213) 237-4888; or e-mail it to socalliving@latimes.com. The best of the lot will receive a Los Angeles Times “Don’t Wait for the Movie” T-shirt.
