Man Beside Freeway Is Hit, Dies
A Fullerton man was killed early Sunday after he left his car on the shoulder of the Riverside Freeway to retrieve a handcart that fell out onto the road.
About 9 a.m., David Harold Gibbons, 54, reportedly parked his Chevrolet El Camino on the right shoulder of the westbound freeway west of Brookhurst Road in Fullerton and got out. The handcart was lying in the far-left lane, according to the Orange County coroner’s office and California Highway Patrol dispatcher Mike Sheldon.
A 33-year-old driver in a 2000 Ford Expedition swerved to avoid the cart, then crossed three lanes of traffic and hit Gibbons, who was still standing on the right shoulder. The Expedition, which was traveling at 65 to 70 mph, then crashed into a sound wall and Gibbons’ car.
Gibbons was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver complained of back pain and was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim.
