Richie Sexson quickly made up for a defensive miscue with a key hit.

Sexson’s double scored the go-ahead run in a four-run 10th inning Tuesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 14-10, after wasting an eight-run lead at Philadelphia.

The Phillies tied the score with two outs in the ninth as Jimmy Rollins scored from second when reliever Curtis Leskanic made a wild threw to first on an infield single by Scott Rolen.

Brewer Manager Davey Lopes thought Sexson should have caught Leskanic’s low throw.

“It was one of those balls going 110 miles per hour,” Sexson said. “It hit the tip of my glove and the ground at the same time. I apologized for it.”

Devon White hit a grand slam, Sexson added a two-run homer and Tyler Houston went five for six to pace a 22-hit attack for the Brewers, who set a franchise record with 12 extra-base hits.

“You get out to a jump like that, you don’t want to lose the game,” Lopes said. “It can destroy you mentally.”

Pinch-hitter Brian Hunter hit a three-run homer, Travis Lee and Marlon Anderson added two-run homers and Bobby Abreu had a solo shot for the Phillies.

Milwaukee (22-17) has won four consecutive games and is five games over .500 for the first time since July 1, 1998. The Phillies, who tied the Chicago Cubs for worst record in the majors last season, are leading the National League East at 22-15.

“They’re were a lot of hanging pitches out there by all of our pitchers,” Philadelphia Manager Larry Bowa said. “A loss is a loss. I don’t like to lose any game. We just didn’t make pitches tonight.”

Houston 9, Chicago 7--Pinch-hitter Tony Eusebio hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning for the Astros at Chicago.

Vinny Castilla, who signed a one-year deal earlier in the day after being released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, made a triumphant debut for the Astros. He drove in two runs, scored three and finished three for five with a walk. Craig Biggio also drove in two runs.

San Francisco 7, Florida 4--Pitcher Livan Hernandez’s two-run single capped a five-run third inning for the Giants at Miami.

The Giants, who have won five in a row, moved into first place in the National League West, a half-game ahead of the Dodgers.

The Giants’ Rich Aurilia went two for three with two walks, hiking his league-leading average to .399.

Atlanta 5, Colorado 3--Marcus Giles hit an eighth-inning grand slam at Atlanta for the first homer of his career as the Braves handed Mike Hampton his first loss.

The struggling Braves trailed, 2-1, after Todd Helton’s run-scoring double in the top half of the eighth, putting them in position to drop five games below .500 for the first time since 1992.

But Giles, a rookie second baseman and the younger brother of Pittsburgh Pirate standout Brian Giles, wiped out the deficit with a 403-foot drive to left-center field.

New York 1, San Diego 0--Rick Reed pitched eight sharp innings, outdueling former teammate Bobby Jones at New York and ending the Mets’ six-game losing streak.

Reed (5-2), the only reliable starter in the rotation, gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Arizona 5, Cincinnati 1--Mark Grace and Reggie Sanders hit consecutive homers against Mark Wohlers in the eighth inning at Cincinnati.

St. Louis 8, Pittsburgh 3--Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead homer and Bobby Bonilla added a three-run homer for the Cardinals at Pittsburgh.
