New West Symphony, conducted by Boris Brott, will present season-ending concerts in Oxnard and Thousand Oaks this weekend. Joining the orchestra to present Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” will be the combined Los Robles Master Chorale and Ventura Master Chorale. Soloists: soprano Jessica Rivera, a New West Symphony Discovery Artist in 2000; contralto Janice Taylor of Canada.

Festival
Strawberry pizza and strawberry shortcake will be a few of the edibles at the 18th annual California Strawberry Festival in Oxnard. The weekend event will also feature an arts and crafts area with more than 300 booths, a shortcake-eating contest and two stages with continuous entertainment. An area called Strawberryland will captivate the kids with a petting zoo and puppet shows. Zoot Suit Revue (Saturday), Richard Street (Saturday), Ska Daddies (Sunday) and Ambrosia with special guest Dave Mason (Sunday) will be among the artists providing live musical entertainment.

Old West
The city of Ventura will present “Cowboys, Heroes & Outlaws: Passport to the American West” on Saturday at the historic Olivas Adobe. Among the activities, participants can earn a “cowboy diploma” while taking part in roping, branding and related activities. There will also be live entertainment, historians, artisans, craft vendors and food.

Fishing Derby
Soroptimist International of Fillmore is looking to lure anglers to Lake Piru on Saturday for the 10th annual Imogene Vest Family Fishing Derby. More than $1,000 in cash prizes and fishing equipment will be awarded to winners in the adult and child categories. All children who participate will receive a fishing starter kit that includes hooks, sinkers and bait. A free children’s casting contest begins at 11 a.m., with the winner receiving a rod and reel; and there will be raffle prizes and a barbecue at 4:30 p.m. ($7.50 adults, $4 children). Proceeds benefit the Imogene Vest Memorial Scholarship Fund.
