Crowd Celebrates Opening of Preschool
A large crowd of parents, children, activists and politicians attended the unveiling Wednesday of a preschool in Florence that can enroll 240 children in a community known for its shortage of affordable day care.
The Florence-Holmes Preschool will be operated by the Montebello-based Mexican American Opportunity Foundation, which teamed up with Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina to finance the project in the southeast Los Angeles community.
Supporters of the school say Los Angeles County ranks near the bottom among California counties in the availability of subsidized child care. The nonprofit group has operated child-care centers in low-income communities across California for three decades.
