Bobby Murdoch, 56, the Celtic soccer legend who helped his Lisbon Lions become Britain’s first team to capture the European Cup in 1967, died Tuesday in Glasgow, Scotland, after a stroke.

Murdoch helped the Celtic side lift Europe’s premier trophy by beating Inter Milan, 2-1, in Lisbon, Portugal. The winning goal came from a Murdoch shot, which was deflected in by Stevie Chalmers.

After joining Celtic in 1959, Murdoch won eight Scottish championships with the Bhoys, was capped 12 times for Scotland, and played and coached at English club Middlesbrough.

Celtic chairman Brian Quinn said Murdoch’s “achievements as a Lisbon Lion and as a Scottish international will ensure that he lives on forever in the hearts and minds of the Celtic family and football fans everywhere as one of the Celtic legends.”

Flags flew at half-staff at Middlesbrough, where Murdoch spent nine years as player, coach and manager between 1973 and 1982.
