Residents Appeal Plan for Third Disney Park

From Times Staff Reports

Anaheim homeowners filed an appeal with the city Wednesday, hoping to delay planning for a third Disney theme park.

The appeal asks the City Council to overturn a Planning Commission decision to begin accepting applications from Disney related to the third park. Though Disney has announced no specific plans, a draft environmental impact report is due out this summer.

“It is insane for a government to start initial approval of a 78-acre project without knowing what’s going to be there,” said Jim Anderson, a director of Homeowners for Maintaining Their Environment, which filed the appeal. “The tactic that Disney is using is that nobody will oppose anything that they don’t know anything about.”

City officials have said they do not expect problems drafting the report because they have experience studying the effects of theme parks and major recreational and retail projects.

Disney officials have said the public will have ample opportunity for input as the project progresses. The first hearing is set for July 10.
