‘Katie and CeCe’: A Nudge in the Ribs

The title of Katie Massa and CeCe Pleasants’ one-hour sketch comedy show, “Katie and CeCe: We’re Not That Way,” refers to lesbianism. But this brightly cheerful comedy duo at the Coast Playhouse isn’t lasciviously suggestive. The humor is the more obvious wink-wink, nod-nod type, heavily laced with profanity that incongruously contrasts with their perky, smiling faces.

The set practically assaults the audience with its sunny blocks of hot pink, orange and yellow. A short video (directed by Paul Sullivan) shows interviews with their mothers about their daughters’ comedy careers.

Under the direction of Ted Sullivan, the sketches are short and the transitions brisk. The topics range from a nerdy girl and her lesbian-leaning camp counselor, “white trash Americans who think they’re British” (think Madonna), a Christian fundamentalist infomercial and two women in the military who fight their sexual attraction for each other while giving a recruitment presentation at a high school.

This twosome is pleasantly funny. The material is definitely for adults.
