Reed Favorite at Flo-Jo Run in Laguna

Danny Reed of Laguna Niguel is the favorite in the men’s field Monday at the Flo-Jo Memorial Half Marathon near Laguna Hills Mall.

Reed, 40, finished 37th overall and fifth in the masters division last month at the Boston Marathon. He won the 5K at this event last year and won the 10K at the Laguna Classic in Laguna Beach three weeks ago in 32 minutes 22 seconds.

Also running in the half marathon is defending champion Marco Ochoa, a former Santa Ana College cross-country coach who splits time between Fullerton and Alamosa, Colo.

Suzie Morris of Encinitas will try to win the women’s half marathon for the second consecutive year.

The half marathon begins at 7:15 a.m. and the 5K will start about 20 minutes later.

The event, held in memory of five-time Olympic medalist Florence Griffith Joyner, benefits Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and the Flo-Jo Memorial Community Empowerment Foundation.

BASKETBALL

The Roundball Extravaganza, which features seven games involving all-star players in grades 8-12, will be June 3 at Marina High.

The event starts at noon with the boys’ eighth-grade game and concludes after the 7:30 p.m. game involving graduating high school girls. Expected to compete in the featured girls’ game are Times’ Orange County player of the year Veronica Johns-Richardson (Troy), Kristen Mann (Foothill), Bethany Blair (Esperanza) and Brandi Davis (Sonora).

Expected to compete in the featured 6:15 p.m. game involving graduating high school boys are Ricky Porter (Mater Dei), Matt MacGinnis (Villa Park), Marques Crane and Torin Beeler (Ocean View) and Danny Lambert (Woodbridge).

SOCCER

UC Irvine announced the signing of six men’s soccer players. They are: Garret Lenox, a first-team all-state goalkeeper from De Anza College; Matt Moseley, a second-team all-state midfielder from Orange Coast College and a former Huntington Beach High player; David Rawlings, a first-team All-American at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz.; Nathan Chu, an All-Marmonte League midfielder from Thousand Oaks High; Daniel Marshall, a defender from Corona del Mar High, and Josh Brown, a first-team all-county defender from Capistrano Valley High.

* Margit Vogele of Corona del Mar High has signed to play at Iowa.

Vogele, a midfielder, was named first-team All-Pacific Coast League last season. Her sister, Britta, a goalkeeper, committed to Iowa in February.

* Jim Watwood has been hired as women’s coach at Hope International. Watwood was 45-33-11 at Lakewood High the last four seasons.
