Brian Baron, a former Hart High outfielder who set a UCLA record with a .443 batting average this season, has signed with the Minnesota Twins.

Baron, who leaves Friday to play in the Florida State League, was drafted in the 46th round last year by the Twins after missing the season with an injury.

Kurt Birkins, former El Camino Real High pitcher, will report June 9 after receiving a $395,000 signing bonus from the Baltimore Orioles. He was a 33rd-round draft choice last year and played for Pierce College.

Eddie Degerman, a right-handed pitcher for Granada Hills High, has committed to UC Irvine. He had a 7-2 record and 1.51 earned-run average during the regular season.

First baseman Jared Pitney, pitcher-designated hitter Dan Haren and pitcher Noah Lowry of Pepperdine were selected to the NCAA first-round regional all-tournament team.

Third baseman Michael Moon of USC was selected outstanding player.

Basketball

Damarcus Ellis of Valley College, a 6-1 All-Western State Conference guard, has signed with Robert Morris University.

Cory Kruseman of Ventura won the 50-lap main event for SCRA sprint cars at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. Troy Rutherford of Ojai finished third and Rip Williams of Yorba Linda was second.
