Panel Rejects Highway Project for Ballot
A tax proposal that would have financed widening of California 1 will not go to voters.
The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission on Thursday narrowly rejected a move to place a tax measure on the November 2002 or spring 2003 ballot. The panel was deadlocked at 5 to 5.
Commissioners who voted against the measure said there were not enough details about the project or its cost.
Initial estimates for the project ranged from $100 million to $300 million. The California Department of Transportation is studying the project and may deliver a cost estimate by January.
