FIRST QUARTER

Washington State 7, UCLA 0

THE SCORING: * Washington State: Mark Baldwin, 27-yard pass from Jason Gesser at 2:29. 58-yard drive, six plays. PAT--Drew Dunning (kick).

TURNING POINT: After UCLA quarterback Ryan McCann--starting in place of injured Cory Paus--threw his second interception shortly before the end of the first quarter, Paus started warming up.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Neither offense was at full strength. Washington State running back Dave Minnich, who had returned from arthroscopic knee surgery last week, was back on the sideline. UCLA’s Paus played with a sprained thumb on his throwing hand, regular backup Scott McEwan didn’t play because of a sprained ankle, and receiver Brian Poli-Dixon is out with a separated shoulder.

STAT WATCH: McCann threw eight passes, completed three for 33 yards and was intercepted twice before being pulled.

SECOND QUARTER

Washington State 10, UCLA 7

THE SCORING: * Washington State: Dunning, 30-yard field goal at 12:20. 40-yard drive, seven plays. UCLA: DeShaun Foster, 26-yard run at 4:50. 35-yard drive, two plays. PAT--Chris Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: UCLA got on the board thanks to field position. A 31-yard Washington State punt gave UCLA a first down at the Cougar 35, and Foster scored two plays later.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Washington State’s first two scores--a touchdown and a field goal--came after the Cougars picked off McCann passes.

STAT WATCH: UCLA had eight penalties for 55 yards in the first half.

THIRD QUARTER

Washington State 17, UCLA 14

THE SCORING: * Washington State: Al Genatone, 73-yard fumble return at 6:52. PAT--Dunning (kick). UCLA: Ben Emanuel, 29-yard interception return at 1:39. PAT: Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: Foster’s fumbling problem resurfaced when he was stripped by Fred Shavies and lost the ball on a play that began at the Washington State 16-yard line. Genatone recovered and turned it into a touchdown and a 10-point lead.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: UCLA receiver Tab Perry, injured when Marcus Trufant hit him after a reception and jarred the ball loose, was taken to the hospital by ambulance with possible broken ribs.

STAT WATCH: After three quarters, the Bruins had four turnovers and counting--two on interceptions and two on fumbles.

FOURTH QUARTER

Washington State 20, UCLA 14

THE SCORING: * Washington State: Dunning, 25-yard field goal at 3:51. 50-yard drive, 16 plays.

TURNING POINT: Lamont Thompson did in the Bruins with four interceptions--three as they threatened to rally in the fourth, and the final one with a little more than a minute to play.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Martin Stadium only holds 35,000, but it was plenty loud as fans carried quarterback Gesser off the field on their shoulders. “They should have lifted up Lamont,” Gesser said.

STAT WATCH: After giving up 446 yards rushing to Oregon last week, the Cougars held UCLA to a net of 85 and Foster to 102.
